A warm welcome to everyone in Year 1, my name is Mrs Hall and I will be your class teacher this year along with Mrs Slater who will be our teaching assistant. I am looking forward to getting to know you all and I am planning for us to enjoy some creative and exciting learning together. The class webpage will keep you up to date with what's happening in class as well as providing useful information on our weekly activities - please check-in regularly to see what we've been learning.
Phonics and Reading
This year we will be changing to the Little Wandle Phonics and Reading scheme to support our learning in KS1.
Year 1 children will have a whole class phonics lesson each morning with some children having additional short 'Keep Up' sessions in the afternoon.
The children will also have Reading Practise sessions at least three times a week. Each week they will bring the book home on a Friday that they have been reading during these sessions. It is important that children get to celebrate their reading progress by sharing this book with you at home. The book will then need to be returned to school on Monday for other groups to use.
In addition to their Little Wandle reading book, children will also bring home a 'Reading for Pleasure' book chosen from the KS1 or class library. This book is a free choice book so may not be at your child's reading level, however this book is to promote a love for reading and we hope you will share this book with your child.
Please write a short note in your child's reading record each time they read at home and send the reading record into school each day.
Shooting Stars!
To encourage reading for pleasure, KS1 is celebrating readers with its Shooting Stars chart. Each time your child reads three times at home in a week (recorded in their reading record), they will move up a star on the chart. There will be stickers awarded for weekly moves and special prizes each time a child reaches the fifth star. There will be a special award for children reaching the final star (30th) before the end of the year. So get reading!!!
