Re-read the opening of the novel ‘Prologue’ (pages 7-10) and the description of the interior of the shop in Chapter 1, ‘A Chance Encounter’ (Pages 13, ‘The Shop was a cave...’ to14, “See?” he said,’).
Think about what techniques and skills the author, Ross Mackenzie, has used to make the opening exciting and how he has described the shop.
Compile a list of techniques the author has used, this may include features, such as:
- Noun phrases to describe the shop
- Not revealing everything at once (a sense of mystery – keep the reader guessing)
- Vocabulary synonymous with intrigue and mystery: ‘curious’, ‘strange’ etc.
- How the opening is structured: The author describes the shop from far away – moving closer: Arrival of shop on the street to the description on exterior of shop to the description of things emerging from the shop and then the description of interior of shop.
Once you have done this read the extracts from
Madame Pamplemousse and Her Incredible Edibles by Rupert Kingfisher
The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow by Katherine Woodfine
See if you can find the same techniques and skills in these two books. Can you magpie any key vocabulary, fronted adverbials, senses, noun phrases. Make a list of all these so we could use them later.
